This is one of
Earthbound Studios “Big Head” series. They are a must for any fan
of the classic “B Movie” monsters of the ‘50s and ‘60s. I saw this
film when I was young and it helped me to get hooked on the rubber
suit monster movies.
This was a great kit to do especially
if you are in the mood to paint. There is no build-up time at all
and the part fit is perfect. It comes in 6 resin pieces: a 2 part
base, head, teeth, 2 horns and stands 16” tall. The base is a clear
resin that gives a great opportunity for lighting. As with all the
Big Heads, they are connected to the base by a ball and socket
joint. This allows the head to be positioned or tilted to give the
model that little extra attitude. Mark’s casting is perfect. I
had to scrape a couple of faint seams lines that took about 5
minutes. After that I gave her a bath, a quick coat of primer and
I’m ready to paint.
Since the film was black and white it
leaves a lot of room for interpretation. It’s obviously a dark
colored creature and Robert Clarke has said his make up was actually
green. So I guess the concept was a lizardy type of monster. I
figured I have enough green monsters in my collection so I wanted to
go with a more burnt and crispy approach. I chose the brown, orange
and red spectrum to render him. Starting with a brownish base I
worked my up through 13 layers of acrylic colors to get the final
finish.
I decided to light the clear base so
I built up layers of Tamiya clear red until I got the desired
density of color. The rocks were hand painted and dry brushed.
I think my paint time on this was a little less than usual. It just
seemed to come together. I’m usually kinda slow when I paint. I’m
real happy with the way this kit turned out though. It’s one of my
favorites. |
